I have Win2003 SP1 and just received disks with Win2003 R2. I'm thinking whether it's advisable to do an update or I should stick with SP1? What should I take into the consideration if I am to do an upgrade? I would like to hear some experiences with this situation if someone could share Smiley

Try to apply to other box first before implementing it in the production environment

IIRC, R2 has an installation feature that disables all ports during install, and then only opens a port to connect to Micrsoft Update for patch downloads. I guess there were security issues during the install.

When I spoke to a Microsoft consultant he suggested not upgrading to R2 unless you wanted to use the advanced features such a DFS, Quotas, Print Management etc

be careful, R2 has a lot of problems with AD replications, DCOM permissions , etc
test it first with your software

R2 is very similar to SP1.  I would recommend R2 only if you want to take advantage of the RDC feature of DFS.  Otherwise just stick with SP1.

If you choose to perform windows update upgrading to R2, you may have problem later when you install / uninstall other softwares that require the original XP CD, the OS may not allow you to continue because of different version of OS between the running one and the CD.

try to patch it on a NON-production server, if everything is fine after the patch, then go for it
